The facts, claim by claim

Where data is stored
Canada: "Canadian customers are stored in Canada (AWS Canada) by default" (QuickChart trust page). EU and US hosting also offered
Where it is processed
Mostly Canada. In the default "Canada Preferred" mode, "fallback routes, capacity overflow, advanced AI features" may use approved non-Canadian processors; in "Canada Strict" mode "No U.S.-based AI processors are used" (privacy policy)
Support and backups
Audio not kept after transcription; transcripts kept 30 days by default (3 days or no fixed period optional); deleted data stays in encrypted backups up to 7 days. Support has no routine access to clinical content (QuickChart)
Owner
QuickChart Inc. (Sudbury, ON), founded by two Canadian physicians, a cardiologist and an orthopaedic surgeon; no parent company named · Parent country: Canada
Servers run by
Amazon Web Services (Canada); AI features may use services on Google Cloud, AWS Bedrock, Microsoft Azure and other processors (privacy policy) · US company
Customer-held keys
Not recorded
Certifications
SOC 2 Type II (QuickChart)
Worth knowing
Says it does not use clinical content to train AI models. On Supply Ontario's AI Scribe vendor of record list.
Caveats
Ownership rests on its Sudbury address and its founders; ask whether any investor or parent controls it. A buyer that needs processing kept in Canada should ask for Canada Strict mode in writing and which features it turns off. Ask for the subprocessor list and which AI processors run in the US.

What the rules say about this

  • US CLOUD Act: The owner is not American, but a US company runs the servers underneath.
  • Nova Scotia public bodies: Storage and access must both be in Canada: check support access and backups, not only storage.
  • Québec Law 25: Canada is not Québec: storage in Toronto still needs a privacy impact assessment for Québec data.
  • OCAP®: Data held by any outside vendor is not in the Nation's possession, whoever owns the vendor.

Summaries only; each rule page links the law or regulator. Not legal advice.
