Does Rocket.Chat store data in Canada?
Rocket.Chat (self-hosted or Rocket.Chat Cloud)
If you host it yourself.
Rocket.Chat can run on servers you choose. Data stays in Canada only if you host it in Canada. Where it is processed: Wherever you run it; US or EU for Rocket.Chat Cloud. It is owned by a US company, so the US CLOUD Act can require it to produce data it controls, wherever that data is stored.
Checked 2026-10-16 against the vendor's own pages.
The facts, claim by claim
- Where data is stored
- Self-hosted: wherever you run it. Rocket.Chat Cloud: "hosting in the United States" or "hosting in the European Union"; the Dedicated private cloud offers "Customer selection of regions", but no page read names Canada
- Where it is processed
- Wherever you run it; US or EU for Rocket.Chat Cloud
- Support and backups
- MongoDB Cloud (US) for analytics and backup management (subprocessor list)
- Owner
- Rocket.Chat Technologies Corp. (Wilmington, DE), the contracting entity for customers outside Brazil; affiliate Rocketchat Tecnologia LTDA (Brazil) · Parent country: United States
- Servers run by
- Your own servers, or Rocket.Chat Cloud on OVH and AWS · US company
- Customer-held keys
- You hold the data when self-hosted
- Certifications
- Not recorded (blank means not checked, not none)
- Worth knowing
- Rocket.Chat can be deployed "on your own server", so it can run on Canadian infrastructure. Its cloud regions are the US and the EU.
- Caveats
- Cloud privacy notice effective 2023-10-20. Its push notification service runs on OVH in the US (subprocessor list): ask what a self-hosted server sends through it, and whether a Dedicated cloud can be placed in Canada.
What the rules say about this
- US CLOUD Act: The owner is a US company: storing data in Canada does not take it out of reach of US legal process.
- Nova Scotia public bodies: Storage and access must both be in Canada: check support access and backups, not only storage.
- Québec Law 25: Canada is not Québec: storage in Toronto still needs a privacy impact assessment for Québec data.
- OCAP®: Self-hosting on Nation-controlled or Canadian-owned infrastructure is the route to possession.
