Does Bitwarden store data in Canada?
Bitwarden Password Manager (cloud or self-hosted)
If you host it yourself.
Bitwarden can run on servers you choose. Data stays in Canada only if you host it in Canada. It is owned by a US company, so the US CLOUD Act can require it to produce data it controls, wherever that data is stored.
Self-hosted: Run it yourselfSoftware you install on servers you choose. The vendor never holds your data.

The facts, claim by claim
- Where data is stored
- Cloud: Microsoft Azure in the US or EU (no Canadian region). Self-hosted: wherever you run it
- Where it is processed
- US or EU for cloud
- Support and backups
- Not stated on the pages read
- Owner
- Bitwarden, Inc. (Santa Barbara, CA) · Parent country: United States
- Servers run by
- Microsoft Azure (cloud) or your own servers · US company
- Customer-held keys
- End-to-end encrypted
- Certifications
- Not recorded (blank means not checked, not none)
- Worth knowing
- Open source and free to self-host, so the cloud's lack of a Canadian region can be avoided by running it yourself in Canada.
What the rules say about this
- US CLOUD Act: The owner is a US company: storing data in Canada does not take it out of reach of US legal process.
- Nova Scotia public bodies: Storage and access must both be in Canada: check support access and backups, not only storage.
- Québec Law 25: Canada is not Québec: storage in Toronto still needs a privacy impact assessment for Québec data.
- OCAP®: Self-hosting on Nation-controlled or Canadian-owned infrastructure is the route to possession.
Summaries only; each rule page links the law or regulator. Not legal advice.
